This scholarship fund is made possible by the generous donations of women who have attended Serenity in the Smokies who wish “to pay it forward” allowing us to support women in halfway houses or with limited resources to share in this healing experience of recovery. All donations received and money raised at Serenity via sales and special events such as the "Opportunity to Get a Gift" are dedicated solely to the scholarship fund. In 2006, the fund was officially named the Patte Mitchell Scholarship Fund in honor of Patte Mitchell who died in December 2005.
Patte Mitchell was a long time Al-Anon member and Serenity presenter. Following the tragic death of her 18 year old son from an alcohol related car accident, Patte founded the Peninsula Village Residential Treatment Program in 1986 for adolescents with emotional and chemical dependency problems. She was passionate about developing therapeutic programs for the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) utilizing story and ritual from a variety of wisdom and traditions, particularly those from Native American culture. In her son Chris’ words: She truly embodied the spirit of the “wounded healer,” transforming the pain and suffering in her own life into positive change for herself and others. She was a spiritual seeker, adventurer, healer of hearts, story teller, and dear friend to many. She mindfully navigated her own authentic journey and sought to help other women empower themselves and each other. “That book" she never got around to writing is etched in the many hearts and minds she touched along the way. She continues her work of empowering others as do we through this ongoing scholarship fund. Her story can be found in the Serenity archives October 17, 1986.
Through the generous donations of the women who attend Serenity in the Smokies, the Serenity Committee is blessed to be able to offer partial scholarships each year based on financial needs. All donations received and money raised at Serenity via sales and special events such as the "Opportunty to Get a Gift" are dedicated solely to the scholarship fund. Donations of items for the "Opportunity to Get a Gift" drawing are appreciated. The more desirable the gifts, the more tickets will be sold, and the more money will be made for scholarships.
